THE VILLAGE OF CANE

by James Brady

ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF CANE

A children's short story, completed in 1977, by my father James Brady. It tells the tale of Mayor Sweethtooth who presides over the village of Cane where sweets are the norm and anything grown from the ground (ie: vegetables) were an abomination.

One day, Mr. Green (the Vegetarian Man) enters the village and upon seeing him the villagers are shocked and soon up in arms. You see, Mr. Green wishes to spread the good word of the "vegetable" and frowns upon the rich desserts the children of Cane seem all too much to indulge. Needless to say, he and Mayor Sweethtooth are soon at odds with one another.

My father worked on this tale (among others) for several years, working on the narrative rhyme scheme as well as acquiring the services of an artist to create illustrations for he wished to reach his audience both verbally and visually. He did not live to see his dream come true but his seeds have been planted (like the Vegetarian Man) and someday I hope to cultivate this short tale into a feature length animated screenplay mixing both his words with my images.

I've scanned the original work from the very pages he typed over 20 years ago, leaving it completely uncensored. Enjoy.
